The Belief ·
Jade is not worn. It is kept alive.

Selection
A single rough is chosen and sworn to one piece — never two. The stone chooses its future.
Reading the Grain
Light, oil, patience. The carver follows the jade’s own lines, never forcing the design upon it.
Roughing Out
The heavy cuts — the silhouette is freed from the raw, the scale fixed to the human hand.
The Detail
Intaglio and openwork by hand. A single unbroken line, drawn only once; to break it is to begin again.
The Grease-Sheen
Weeks of hand-polish until the jade takes its living lustre — then a year of rest before it meets its keeper.

Where the stones come from: the Kunlun foothills, river-polished for centuries, harvested by hand in the thaw months. The house keeps a single cutter there who has seen every season for forty years.
Where the old school lives: fine line, openwork, and the patience to leave a piece untouched for weeks while the design settles. The master’s bench is a hundred years old and has never been sanded.
Where the sheen is laid on: weeks of hand-polish until the surface takes the living lustre called 油润. Nothing here is rushed; the only deadline is the stone’s own.

The First Stone
The earliest worked jade — axes and ornaments of the Xinglongwa culture — already polished, already beloved.
Ritual & Rank
Jade becomes the language of heaven and rank: bi for the sky, cong for the earth, gui for the noble.
The Noble & His Jade
Confucius names jade’s five virtues. The noble keeps jade upon him — 君子无故,玉不去身.
Death & Immortality
The jade suit of the Han — hundreds of plaques sewn in gold thread — guarding the body toward eternity.
The Open Market
Jade leaves the court for the city. The figure-carver’s knife learns lightness, humour, and the human form.
The Age of Ingenuity
Ziyu, jiashan, the scholar’s seal — one stone, a whole landscape. The masterpiece age of jade.
Heritage
Museums, ateliers, and a hundred million private keepers. The oldest craft in China, still carried close.

For the openwork chain-piece that took eleven months to free from a single stone.
For the twin-lotus — two blooms freed from one rough, fit tested in darkness.
The house recognised as a keeper of the old river-carving school.
A limited pair of peace knots exhibited in the Palace Museum’s craft wing.
For the year’s most restrained piece — a plain white disc that needed nothing added.

The emperor’s stone — creamy, dense, revered as the truest jade of all. Warm white, honest light.
Deep green-grey, the colour of ancient mountains. Sturdy, powerful, often chosen for seals and weighty pieces.
Rich malachite green with dark flecks — the jade of vigorous growth and strong protection.
Black as ink, luminous at the edge. Reserved, profound — the jade of wisdom and the water element.
The imperial green. Ice-like water, emerald fire — the most coveted stone of the modern age.
China’s own kaleidoscope — layered greens, ochres, creams in a single stone. Rarity in the cutting.
A Small Lexicon ·
Lines cut into the stone, shallow as breath — the shadow of the engraving carries the image.
Where light must pass through, the stone becomes its own frame.
Full-form carving, seen from every side — the piece lives in the round.
Weeks of hand-polish until the surface takes a living, soft lustre like warm oil.
The transparency of the stone — good water means the light swims inside.
A soft internal cloud, natural to the stone; part of its honest character.
Colour that has entered the jade over centuries of earth — a mark of age and truth.
Carving that uses the natural colour of the stone as part of the design — a flame where the red lies.
The art of making the flaw part of the picture — a crack becomes a stream, a fleck becomes a moon.
A ring cut loose from the stone itself, free to turn — a tour-de-force of openwork.
The scholar’s tablet, named for master Lu Zigang — scene before, wish behind.
The weathered outer colour of a river stone — kept as a frame for the inner jade.
When the surface holds a gel-like depth under light — the sign of a perfectly polished stone.
Reading and steering around every internal line — the carver’s first and oldest discipline.
The first, bravest cut — freeing the piece that already lives inside the stone.
Bringing the mass to its silhouette by slow wheel — the hour when the mountain becomes a shape.
The hollow worked from within — the test of a steady hand and a patient eye.
A line so fine it seems to float — the mark of the Suzhou school’s highest hand.
The final hand-pass that lays the sheen — felt, not seen, through the fingertips.
The century-deep finish a kept jade earns — not polished on, but lived into.
Striking the jade and reading its ring — the clearest stone sounds the truest note.
Days of slow grinding with ever-finer grit — the patient conversation that ends only when the stone agrees.
The Forms ·
The simplest circle of jade — smooth, unadorned, the shape most worn close to the heart.
The ritual disc of heaven, hollow at the centre — the ancestor of every round jade.
Full-round carving of the fortune guardian — often carried, sometimes as a weighty pendant.
The rectangular tablet of the scholar — front carved with a scene, reverse with a wish.
The loose term for a wearable carving — disc, animal, or figure suspended on silk or cord.
A closed circle for the wrist — once cut, never repaired; the oath of a marriage.
The Care ·
Wear close
Jade is kept by the skin, never in a drawer. Body warmth is its food.
Polish by hand
A slow pass with clean fingers keeps the grease-sheen alive. No cloths, no wax.
Avoid heat & grease
Kitchen steam, strong light, hard knocks — keep the stone from what would dull it.
Rinse, then rest
A rinse in clear water, a wipe with a soft palm, a night of rest. That is all jade asks.
A Letter from the Master ·

The first cut is the bravest. A river stone holds a thousand possibilities; the moment the wheel touches it, nine hundred and ninety-nine die.
Some days the carver does not carve. He holds the stone to the window and waits — for the hour when the light shows where the design already lives.
The peace knot’s opening is cut last. Masters say a disc without its hole is still a mountain; with it, the mountain becomes a door.
The sheen is laid on in the dark, by candle and hand, when the eye can no longer see and only the fingers remember the water.
When a piece is sealed, the carver writes its number in a single ledger line. He does not sign the stone — the stone signs him.
Every piece leaves the house as a child leaves. We wrap it twice, hold the case a moment, and let it go — hoping it is loved as it was made.
The Rites ·
On a day of your choosing, the piece is held to the morning light and named aloud once. From that hour it is yours, and it knows it.
Under a new moon or before a journey: rinse in clear water, dry on the palm, rest a night apart. A clean stone is a listening stone.
A jade is never handed over — it is placed, palm to palm, with the story of who wore it first. The giver’s warmth must cross with the stone.
When a kept jade changes hands, it is not sold but given — with the name of the first keeper, so the stone remembers all of them.

Yes. We swear each rough to a single piece. The archive number on your certificate will never be repeated — the design is destroyed after carving.
Three ways: browse the seven boards and follow your instinct; ask the fortune page with your birth hour; or commission — we read your elements and carve to them.
Eight to twelve weeks for a single piece, from reading the stone to the grease-sheen. A full set may take a season. We never rush a stone.
Every piece ships with its NGTC appraisal, the carver’s mark, and a single archive entry — number, weight, origin, story.
Insured art logistics with signature handover, in a tamper-sealed silk-lined case. Full replacement insurance at the declared value.
Unworn pieces may be returned within fourteen days in their sealed case. Commissioned pieces are carved for you alone and are final.
The opposite — it needs to be worn. Four habits: wear close, polish by hand, avoid heat and chemicals, rinse in clear water.
The grease-sheen comes with time and the wearer’s warmth — months of wearing, a lifetime of deepening. It cannot be rushed or bought.
Yes — a single line, front or reverse, in seal script. We ask that it be short: a name, a date, a vow.
By appointment only, at our three houses. Write to atelier@jue.studio with your city and the piece you have in mind.
A kept jade is not an investment — it is a companion. That said, the house has never once resold a piece below the archive price, and the old families’ jades have outlived every market.
Your certificate carries the NGTC appraisal, the carver’s mark, and one archive entry. Write to us with the archive number and we will confirm it from the ledger — a number is never repeated.
Yes, at our Suzhou and Jieyang houses by appointment. Wear it a while; a piece should choose you as much as you choose it.
The sheen deepens by wearing, not by polishing. A rinse, a palm-dry, a night of rest — and the patience to let the stone age with you.
For commissioned pieces, the house accepts a three-part schedule: on order, on design approval, and on delivery. The stone is reserved to you from the first payment.
Bring it home to us. A broken jade is not an ending — the house re-carves it into a smaller form, so the same stone keeps its keeper.
